Hi Zoran,
Too bad you don't have something to drive the machine so you can watch
the signals into the "scratched chip". Well, you've got the L298's on
the board already, perhaps you could work out a 5-phase drive to the
L298's, possibly using a PIC, or a counter. The data sheets on the
motors should describe a 5-phase drive, and that can be implemented with
counters or PIC. Hopefully LPKF can provide you with info. The Z
shouldn't be a problem for PCB's and engraving (?). Ordinary steppers
are, as you mention, are a possibility.
