It can float over the pcb using a pressure foot, which
rides on top of the board in the lpkf models. Any
variations in the height of the board results in the
spindle assembly being raised as well, compensating
for differences in height. The reason I need variable
control was so I could adjust how much force the
pressure foot exerted and slow down or speed up the
drilling cycle. The sequences I use are programmed
into a parallel word eeprom, which can be adjusted in
timing by word multiplication or timing frequency
multiplication. The floating head can, in fact, be
built for a sherline machine. I've had similar
questions. The head works best with a low mass spindle
assembly or a counter-balanced spindle assembly. I'll
have to look up the 5 phase sequences for you. They're
around here somewhere. Let me know if you have any
other questions. Thanks ;)
