Hi.
My name is Colin, I am a HSM in the U. K. I am 50 years old and my main interests are tool making and machining of metal in general. My other interests include hobby electronics and computers.
I have just recently joined the news group ( 19th. May.)
I have been pleasantly surprised at the advanced techniques (CNC etc.) that I have seen on a number of U. S. web pages. Here in the U. K. it is widely acknowledged that there is a "certain reluctance" to explore the more advanced techniques among the HSM fraternity.
Model Engineer's Workshop magazine have carried out two reader surveys and have concluded that a possible reason for this is that a high proportion of readers fall into the over sixty age group and as such have not had the opportunity to work with computers and other high tec equipment. I feel sure that if more information on the practical side of advanced matching was available to them a lot more people would get involved here in the U. K.
It is only fairly recently that articles on CNC have started to appear in U. K. journal's and the information that is available is of a fairly basic nature. Speaking personally I welcome this new direction.
I have some twenty five years practical experience as a HSM and hope to be able to make a useful contribution to the group.
In return I would be most grateful for any information that anyone can give me regarding conversion of my milling machine to CNC. The machine is a Taiwanese mill/drill Major model. I am also interested in home brewed DRO's. I would also be interested in links to other similar news groups.
If I can provide anyone in the group with any information available in the U. K. you only have to email me and I will do my best to provide it.
Kind regards
Colin
