Nope, that is wrong, and that is at least part of your problem. The real
version of EMC requires extensive system privledges, as it installs
kernel modules, connects to physical hardware (parallel port) and
open windows to memory regions, etc. The easiest way to do this is
to log on as the system administrator. When you installed the BDI
(or any other Linux install) you wre required to give the name and
password for a 'root' account. Usually, the username is 'root', but
the password is whatever you gave it there.

If you don't remember what you typed in for root, you are pretty well
sunk. Linux gurus know how to break security and set a new password.
Mostly, you boot it from LILO With the single user parameter, like
LILO
boot: rtlinux single

where rtlinux is the name of the kernel, and single tells it to boot up
single user, which turns off most protection.

When it is up, type
passwd

or
passwd -u root

and then it will ask for your NEW password twice to make sure you
spelled it right.

I hope you don't have to go through this, and have that root password written
down somewhere.
