Matt:
I built three Camtronic 5A boards for my mill conversion. I also
purchased the steppers and power supply parts from Camtronics. I am very
pleased with the quality of these and would go this way again.
I've done some soldering and didn't find these difficult to build. The
directions are good. Get a loupe (sick in your eye magnifying glass) if
your eyes are old like mine. I did find a couple of spots in the
directions I had trouble understanding, probably due to my lack of an
electronics background. Dan at Camtronics was excellent giving help when
I asked. Likewise there are many on this list who have built these kits
and will be glad to answer questions if you have them. I would not
hesitate to recommend you go with Camtronics.
It does take a while to build these kits. Its a trade of your time
(Camtronics) against cost with pre-assembled boards. But even with
pre-assembled boards you'll need to install in a box, wire together with
plugs, run wires to stepper. I found this to be a non-trivial amount of
time, but enjoyable.
Is this for a mill? What type of machine are you converting?
