What are you making? Shower heads.
how about a standard Drill press with an X/Y table with Steppers/servos for
positioning.
for the spindle travel use a stepper/servo with a wire cable wrapped around
a drum in the quill feed and a drum on the stepper shaft. Of course you
would remove the return spring for the quill. You could use different drum
sizes to achive different resolution on the feed.
Cut a "Thread" on the drums for the cable to follow and use 2-3 wraps on the
smaller drum and
fix the ends of the cable (after a few wraps depending on the amount of
feed) on the larger drum.
This will give some control over feed speed and depth.
On the X/Y table mount a fixture to hold the parts.
control the whole thing with a G-Code interpeter and a set of geckos.
This is the medium price version.
If you want really cheap and the parts are small enough some floppy drive
parts can be used.
