Dan,

Do you have any pictures of your conversions? I haven't decided
what I'm going to do about the Z axis or spindle yet and wouldn't
mind seeing a few ideas. I didn't manage to get all of Bob's
articles but I seem to recall him mentioning something about using
one of the axis of another XY table as the Z.
