That leads me to another question. What is the best arrangement for
filtering the DC after the bridge rectifier? I have seen this done
several ways and was wondering if there was a set method.

Depending on which types of caps you are looking for, there are
several sources. Microvave oven caps tend to be a favorite with the
high voltage folks for power factor correction and the like. They
could easily handle this type of working from a voltage standpoint.

I'm not sure what the necessary values are for this type of
application. If you want to make lightning, I can help out there.
