You can certainly series connect capacitors to increase the voltage
handling capability. This will change the total capacitance value.
In one of my other hobbies, we do this all the time. They have been
named MMCs which stands for Multi-mini capacitor. We string together
many capacitors (in my case 1600V .016mfd Panasonic Polypropolene
caps) to handle 10 to 50KV. In some cases, a resistor across each
capacitor is necessary to help drain them after runs and to help
balance the voltage across the array. Info here for the interested:
