I suspect not as I'm fairly sure the originals had the ends of each ring
overlapped and forge welded together. This stopped the rings opening up and
falling apart when they were poked with a sword point. The material was also
somewhat smaller than 3/16" - 16 or 18 gauge wire. To get somewhere near
automating the manufacture I would be looking at making the rings one at a
time - cut wire to length off a coil, wrap it round a mandrel and resistance
weld the ends together. The cunning bit would be to make the second row
interlink with the first row and the third row interlink with the previous
two before they are welded up. Then you are approaching real chainmail -
each link having 6 others passing through it - two to the top, two to the
bottom, one to the left and one to the right - all welded up so they won't
pull apart!
