I have been using the HIWIN screws mike mentioned for a few
years...in fact they are the ones pictured on the engineering
portion of my website.

They generally map out to better than 0.003" max absolute
error over the entire length. The oversize ball preload is
very very stiff and the drag preload torque is low.

As far as robust machine components, even a lightly loaded
machine will have huge forces during a collision or crash.
To me the linear rails just blow away round shafting or
grooved wheel trolleys - and they are so easy to use.
You just need a good flat surface to bolt them to. I usually
also dowel pin the master rail.
