Hi Doug,
Just like the old radio antenna, you swage ( term ? ) the end so it
tapers down to a close fit on the smaller tube, then on the inner
tube, you just flare out the end.
By putting a heavy swage and flare, then boring and turning the parts
to fit there is enough metal to keep from wearing quickly and pulling
out.
My concern is that once something gets in there, it stays. Like I
said, I haven't gotten this into real use as yet.
Also with my long table, I did not go for a full length cover, just 2
feet on one end to let the chips fall off. The leadscrew has extra
length under the part holder. My two hole drilling forces a stand
off from the part holding end of almost a foot.
For the fixed end (holding the leadscrew from turning), I used an
inverted V fixed to the carrage that also has clearance above the end
bracket.
