Most of those ribbed hoses don't really accordion very much. At best, most
of them will compress an inch per foot or so. You need more action than
that for a leadscrew cover. The Gortite stuff will go from 3" to 3' easily.
A pure (natural) rubber hose will fall apart in a week after exposure to
grease or oil. Only Neoprene or some other synthetic rubber will handle
oils.
