From what I was told this afternoon, he bought a surplused
"multipurpose" robot with two different welding heads and a vacuum
gripper.
The sort of thing that is good at some things but great at none.
What he is hoping to do, is rework it to a programmable drilling
machine, using the existing hydraulic drive system.
The PLC was an Allen Bradley SLC500 switching valves on and off to
control the hydraulics.
Using a replacement PLC would probably be the easiest and sane way to
run this, but he would prefer to use one of the 10 computer systems he
has on hand, using the same style of ladder programming as a PLC .

I do not know if what he wants to do is even feasible, at least in an
economical sense, but it's definitely going to be a challenge.
