Hi Luis:
Commercial sinker EDM requires a very expensive dielectric oil and
equally expensive electrode material.
I paid almost $500.00 just to fill my tank, and about $300.00 for a
tellurium copper plate 1" thick by 6" wide by 12" long.
The oil gets contaminated over time and needs to be disposed of...another
100 bucks or so.
If you get into graphite electrodes, your material cost is even higher, and
you need expensive dust management capability.
Maintenance on these machines is very expensive too...a new servo valve is
upwards of $2000.00.
But these tools can work miracles if you build injection molds.
I simply can't do without my machine anymore; it paid for itself on the
first mold I built with it.
With regard to your question about speed; EDM is not a fast process for
removing lots of metal.
My machine is very small...only 20 amps, but it can burn a slot 0.100" wide,
0.100" deep, and 1.0" long in about fifteen minutes on a coarse setting with
copper electrodes.
A heavier machine can improve on this a bit, but not all that much unless
the power supply is very sophisticated.
Modern CNC EDM's achieve their performance by continuously monitoring the
spark gap conditions and adjusting them on the fly, but they are very
expensive machines...hundreds of thousands of dollars for a high end
machine.
Cheers
Marcus
