I suppose what they are saying in effect is that the cutting rate in
terms of linear speed is independant of the wire thickness. The wire
thickness is what gives you the third dimension when working out
volume removed.

If you think about it a wire EDM is like a saw. You want to know how
fast it will go through a given thickness of material not how much
sawdust it will produce.

I don't know how to work these rates out but it must be to do with
the amount of material removed with each spark and the spark rate.
Assuming a single spark removes enough material from that area so
that it will not be struck again then from the width of the pit and
pulse rate the time it takes to remove material from the entire
thickness of the sheet can be worked out. At that point the wire
will be advanced and then process repeated.
