Yes you are right, you can't just reverse the axis direction if you
are in the middle of a gcode move not without some tinkering.
Besides it would waste a lot of time going back especially if it was
a long move. I wasn't thinking.

You might be able to look at the current x,y and the x,y at the start
of the move as well as the type of move and then create a new gcode
move to go back a distance along that path.

I like your idea of storing the last set of pulses in a buffer and
then reversing the sequence possibly seperately from the main
software. If it were done in a uP then it could reverse the path
until told otherwise by the control program then retrace the steps
and let the control program know when back in position.
