You may be right. But I don't see how they can say that. The sparks
occur 180 deg around the wire, maybe more, depending on surface
closeness and dielectric strength. The larger the wire the longer it is
around the wire and the slower the slot will progress thru the work. So
the cutting rate is not independant of the wire thickness. In the past
the wire manufacturers tried to get the thinnest wire possible so that
speed of cut could be increased. When the wire size is constant, then
one cut dimension can be cancelled out and cubic could become square.
If all manufacturers use 0.010" wire, then square inches could be used
as a basis of comparison of cutting speed on material, say 1" thick, but
as soon as any of the other dimensions vary, the argument falls apart again.
