Hello,
I was gonna read all the replies first. BUT...
Routers are used on aluminum every day! All day!
You DID say you were going to build a very sturdy z axis. And Jon has
correctly warned you that you will need stiffness of the entire
machine for best cut quality. Also that "going slow" is the wrong
approach, with some numbers to back it up <good advice, but I'd aim
for even higher feed rates, on the order of 60-80IPM>
So be sure your compound table gibs are tight, and that you keep your
promise to build a sturdy z axis. And use the router. Be sure you
understand chiploads and how cutting into corners affects them.
You'll be fine.
Hope this helps,
Ballendo
P.S. Using something other than mist coolant is a good idea anyway,
regardless of spindle type... A water soluable oil type is a good fit
for aluminum milling. A cheap HF parts washer can provide the "flood"
coolant capability. (Having said this, I've cut miles of aluminum
by "spritzing" wd-40 onto it as it cuts. And the router lasted just
fine...)
