Hi all,

My name is Dennis Pfister, aka: sandeater
I'm also new to the group. I'm a retired Tooling eng./Tool
and Die Maker. For the past 10/12 years, I have been putting
a shop together. Now, that its done, I have the time to
learn how to use CAD-CAM-CNC to do the jobs that are just
sitting there looking at me.<G> I have been looking at this
site for about a about a week/10 days. Great site!! I've
learned a lot just looking!

I have a Grizzly G1006 mill/drill that I'm converting to
CNC. The machine is very good at milling aluminum with a
1/2" bit. I take 1/2" deep by 1/4" to 1/2" wide cuts at
about 4" to 6" ipm, at 650 or so rpm, leaves a very good
finish. (last cut at a slower feed of 2"/3" ipm at about
.005/.008" cut.)

I have an Ideal MK-4 power feed on it at this time.
I saw a how to do article in HSM magazine, about 2 or 3
years ago. As I had a Mk-4, I took about 2 days to install
it. AND, that got me to thinking about CNCing the machine.

I talked to Roland Friestad, of Cardinal Eng., at the
N.A.M.E.S., Exhibition in April, 2002.
He has a column in HSM magazine related to CNC a Grizzly
G1005 Mill/drill.
He suggested that I use no less then 450 oz/in steppers or
servos. As I have a few Japan Servo Co. steppers that look
like they my be large enough. I'll use them.
They are type KP86SM2-002
2.35 vdc, 2.78 amp, 1.8 Deg/Step. 4 wire bipolar.
Anyone know the oz/in spec on these motors? I tried there
home site, no luck.

I'm slowly doing all the machining to retro-fit my G1006.
A larger table is the difference in the
2 machines. I added a drum switch to it for reversing the
spindle. It has been a very good machine for my use.

I hope this helps on the cutting of the aluminum.
