Most "common" cutting boards are HDPE. It's close, but it's not
UHMW... I think the difference for many will keep McMaster on the
ordering list<G>
Yes, UHMW plane bearings are best made thin, though I did have
success once years ago in block form(but I added teflon
gib "buttons").
Many plastic bearing types benefit from a thin section due to thermal
expansion coefficients. Some of the newer types from Igus are useful
in thicker sections.
Personally, if I were making bearings from plastic on a DIY basis,
I'd choose Turcite(modified acetal) first, Delrin(Acetal) second, and
UHMW third. Rulon(PTFE based) is another good choice.
A really great resource, IMO, is the Professional Plastics catalog.
Call 1-800-250-3878 and ask for a catalog. The 2002 version is clear
for the newbie, with numbers for the techie... (I haven't yet seen
the 2003 version.)
