Guys, thanks for the responses. Sounds like having a closed loop
feedback system the way I described might be not worth the effort.
But I do plan on installing the DRO anyway. On the power supply I
may just add some diodes in to get the voltage drop. I did not know
EMC could do backlash compensation per inch of travel (actually,
that's pretty cool). That was the main reason why I was thinking I
would need some position feedback beyond an encoder on the motor.
My BP machine appeared to be doing production work and I am
concerned that the ball screws may have a little bit more wear in
the center than at the ends of their travel. Just out of
curiousity, do any other cnc packages available do backlash
compensation incrementally as does EMC? I do like the idea of
running DOS-based software, as I have a couple of older pentiums
collecting dust.
I bought the steppers last year from www.servosystems.com. They
have a closeout sale link if you click on the motion products link.
The steppers I bought are Bodine Electric 3.6v 6.1a 1125oz/in, and
they were brand new. I don't have the part #'s available, but I
would have to venture to guess that they sold out of these. Shortly
after I bought these (wish I had purchased a spare or two) I saw
someone selling the same motors on ebay for double the price. I
imagine that person may have bought their stock and sold them on
ebay, advertising them as replacement motors for bridgeports.
Regards, Bob
