Instead of just plain nuts expoxied in, use T-Nuts. Our local
home depot and ace hardware have them.

Instead of aluminum, why dont you use some oak plywood. I've used it
quite a bit and it's pretty dimensionally stable. Another thing
that's a possibility is a piece of 2x12, mount it to the table, run a
program to drill a whole bunch of 1/4 inch holes. Then take spot
drill a bunch of "X" holes (just big enough so that a 1/4" nut will
squeeze in pretty tight). When you put all the nuts in, use a little
bit of epoxy or a good glue. Flip it over, remount the 2x12, then
face it off using the router/mill. Walah...a smooth surface with
numerous mounting holes. It might even be better if you can adhere a
heavy duty linoleum tile (like they lay in schools) to the top of the
surface so it's nice and shiny...and more resistant to dings and
"oops's"...it wont get all slivery like the wood will, just a nice
clean cut.
