Milling table

I'm trying to come up with a table table for my mill. It has 12"x12"
travels so finding something is going to be hard. Would it be practical
to bolt a plate of aluminum about 1.5-2" thick and surface it on the
mill itself. I'd like to have T-slots but I don't think I could cut
them with a router. It would be bolted to a 9x14 in surface of the slide.

Any ideas?
