Simply put, they are wrong and you were correct.

The entire project can be sent to a smart controller and just run
without the PC even being connected.

Yes, e-stop and end switches then need to be in the controller.
That's why is would have to be a smart controller.

Also, data transfer can be buffered with 5 minutes of table time
being sent so the buffer has between 5 and 10 minutes of table
time. Even Windoz would have a hard time messing that up.

It was about a year ago when the first public tests were becomming
available for this stuff and many of the software vendors we use have
prototypes to work around.

So, the answer is that not only can it be done, it IS being worked on
and HAS BEEN for the last year.

The question of WHEN it will be a final product is another thing
entirely.

As the saying goes, it takes 90% of the time to do 90% of the work
and another 90% of the time to do 90% of the remaining work and
another 90% of the time.....
