I have made a manual pulse generator with a serial port. This could be
used to generate step pulses, and should be able to be connected via a
USB<->serial adapter.

The G2002 (or G2004/G2005) from Geckodrive will have a USB option
(possibly ethernet as well).

As Paul said, once you take the realtime component off the PC, a lot of
things become possible. In this case, USB only constrains the update
rate, not the pulse rate or response time (to things like ESTOP).
