Two reasons sping to mind if you are wanting to use the RS232 port to control
a CNC machine - 1) You have digital drives, or 2) You want to run an embedded
system and have a second computer for the GUI.

In either case, there is only really one choice that is both free and
adaptable enough. EMC comes complete with ALL the source code, and if you use
the BDI CD, all the tools to develop the software further. In addition, the
latest BDI-4 disk comes with a fully functioning 3D CAD/CAM package with a
FREE 30 day demo.
