I have bought 3 phase motors for about $1 a horsepower. There
doesn't seem to be much of a market for used 3 phase motors.
The Industrial Customer is not interested in spending money on
someone's scrap. The howmeworkshop user doesn't have
3 phase. So it is in the scrap dealers benefit to sell the the small
shop owner a motor to make a 3 phase converter. If he gets the
converter operating, he may be back for more. So, the scrap dealer
has to get a saleable lot of motors or they are just scrap iron. If
he gets several tons, then they can go to a foundry that can use the
copper in their melt.
The scrap dealer needs to be your friend. You need him, He didn't
buy the material with the intention of selling it a piece at time to you.
He bought it with another customer in mind that buys it by the ton.
Most of the time, you are a 'pain'. Many times, the extra effort to
sell to you isn't worth it. Now Salvage Yards are a different business.
If you are lucky, you have a Salvage/Scrap yard.

the pound (meaning CHEAP, if he thinks it's just scrap). If he looks up
the
