With a rack and pinion drive a gear reduction is almost always in order. It
might
be from 4:1 to 20:1.
You need to simultaneously achieve the desired speed and force, and this
is best done by having a reasonable inertia ratio.
As for mass moments of inertia and second moments of area... I mentioned
their
tendency to bewilder...and then used something else to describe the same
thing.
In the case of motors moment of inertia is simply the constant of
proportionality
between torque and angular acceleration. Call it a "flywheel effect" number.
LINEAR
force = mass * acceleration
ROTATION
torque= moment of inertia*angular acceleration
If you google moment of inertia or second moment of area you will find a
huge
amount of information!
And if someone wishes to calculate a rack or belt drive and is not familiar
with software like Motioneering we will be glad to help out as time permits.
