I'd think it would work. DC brush motor is a DC brush motor. Some servos are manufactured this way. Might have to contend with backlash between the gears but other than that just pop and encoder on there and go.

P.S. I gotta stop giving these encoders away :-), Mach4 is under development and they are talking about 6 million pulses per second through the USB. Should be released in beta in a few months.
