Andy, you should be aware that 90% of the people on the list are home
hobbiests whose education and experiance is in some other area than
any question you might ask, be it machining, design, electrical or other.

Also, you will get answers from people who have no education or
experiance in the exact thing to which you speak.

Take the short and sweet questions and answers and considder that if
you do not get what would appear to be engineering information back,
that THAT person may not have the book education or career experiance
in that particular field.

Also, considder that a lot of people who are professional will resist
answering a question that might kill others for the liability factor.

I am not a EE, so my following comments can be taken with a grain of
salt.

IF the largest reason the autotransformer SHOULD not be used is the
ground, then you have some choices. ISOLATE everything, or add
isolation to the power line.

In the isolate everything category comes the death from electrocution
factor if someone bridges the isolation.

In the add isolation to the power line, comes cost and expense.

But, if you NEED AND WANT a variable power supply then the desire is
far greater to figure out HOW to use it.

If you are idly asking because it sparks your interest, then search
teh archives, the pro's have asked and answered it.

If you have a real need, then ask how to use one safely, and you'll
get a whole different set of attitude and answers.
