I actually hooked up a variac power supply circuit last time we got into
this, and made some voltage measurements, etc.
I didn't see any reason why, IF it was hooked up properly, and IF the stuff
that it was powering could deal with a DC supply that was balanced with
respect to ground, there should be any additional danger.
That was why I asked the question in the first place, because I suspect
there MUST be some reason behind it(unless it's just an old wive's tale,
stemming from incorrect hookup, etc?), but I can't seem to get an answer
from any of the folks who say that they know.
Just comments that imply I am lazy, stupid, or just out to give folks a hard
time.

circuit examples of the use of a variac and have the "critical areas
in question circled in red. show also the fuse required
to "protect".
then show a circuit of the "proper" isolation for comparison.
