On one occasion while putting a computer together the wiring for the power
switch got connected 90 degrees off from what it should have been, and when
I hit the switch to fire it up for the first time and nothing happened, I
wondered a bit why, until I noticed how dim the light had gotten all of a
sudden. :-)

Except for the cord getting a bit warm (not even hot!), nothing else seemed
to suffer from this, which I guess is some kind of comment about the wiring
of the place we were in at the time. Threw that cord away, and nothing else
showed a problem once the wiring was connected.

And this error was done under my supervision, a tech who's been messing with
stuff like this for decades, since I started sparking and getting shocks
when I was a kid! At least it let me figure out quick what happened... But
folks that aren't all that experienced on the electrical side of things
aren't likely to be so lucky.
