OSHA inspectors don't protect you particularly. The OSHA regulations
put the practices and requirements of various standards organizations
into one Federal code. Prior to that "codes" were established by
Insurance associations ,UL, the CGA, and the engineering societies
and various trade associations. It was not a unified approach and
was slow to develop. There was no or little government political
involvement. These "regulations" were not universally adopted as
laws and so were hard to implement when political and economic
factors came into play. Non consumer equipment usually does not have
UL testing so it doesn't mean that much outside the home.
I was only heavily involved in the early days of OSHA implementation
and it was a help in getting past company economic concerns-- It
eliminated a lot of arguments when people didn't want to comply with
good practices because it was not the "law". In a corporate
environment even the safety people wanted to hide from it-- They
didn't want to admit they had deficiencies so wouldn't assist in
asking for money to correct the deficiencies..
There still are good conventional practices that are not codified.
We don't need all the politics. There is nothing to prevent you
from doing personal harm but that doesn't mean you can or should do
things that can expose others to harm.
