Data out and data back in (loop). The information is handled at the control and dealt with accordingly. Industry standards change like anything else. At one time open loop stepper systems were industry standard. Does a machine that would be lucky to hold .002" repeatability actually need sub-micron calculations and accuracy?
Comparing EMC and how it operates to Mach is apples and oranges. It's analog vs digital. Two different systems. Mach being a digital system runs fine in an open loop but had no way of reporting in the rare event of lost position. With this interface, that has changed.
Would EMC being analog run in an open loop? From what I've read, it doesn't sound like it. EMC has its method of closing its loop and now Mach has its method of closing it's loop. It's certain in the future that improvements will be made in regard to the way Mach handles position. Real time corrections would just be a matter of revising the macropump that presently monitors position and halts the sytem in a discrepancy.

the actual position is outside a set range from the commanded position.
It's open loop with an error bar.
