That is correct, plus laquer thinner, acetone, and many other solvents will
do the same. Also rubber can be damaged with these solvents as well. That
is why I recommend the mineral spirits, it doesn't have the same destructive
effects on plastic and rubber as the harsher solvents do. However, it will
damage many paints. WD 40 is more expensive but it, also, doesn't damage the
plastic, rubber parts like the more harsh solvents, and it is not as bad on
paint as mineral spirits.
