Bill,
It may help to remember that what we typically call "jumpers", are
called "shorting blocks" by the distributors...
I'm sure Jeff means that a jumper ON is shorted to ground.
Side note: It makes sense to arrange your board so that the most
common use is most easily supported, costs the least, and if
possible uses the least current. So by putting a couple pullup R's
to the A3977 MS0 and MS1 pins, you have 1/8 step by default. THEN
you can short things to ground to get the other, less often used
options...
Done this way, your least used options "waste" the most current.
I like 1/4 step with .9° motors myself and was gonna set our boards
up for this. But industry "standards" prevailed, so now we're like
Jeff, HCNC and others.
