Unlike a lot of people on this list who run millers and routers I was
looking for a program to operate a CNC lathe.
As I don't have any programming skills that put a lot out of reach.
Added to this I need the ability to use G33, the threading cycle.
From making enquiries this furthur cut the choice down to either Ahha
or Microkinetics.
Ahha has far more features going for it than Microkinetics. Things
like tool offsets, a macro language and the ability to handle
external drivers as opposed to their driver system.
Now I have made this decision I have started work converting this
lathe from it's old servo / resolver system to a more modern servo/
tacho / encoder system.
The first job will be to replace the motors from the original Siemens
350 oz/in motors to SEM 640 oz/in motors and install 12A 140v Baldor
drive cards.
I then aim to fit an Ahha Artisan Pro system to drive all this.
Most of it looks reasonably easy, possibly the hardest part is the
gearbox control which is powered by electromagnetic clutches and the
14 speeds require 7 outputs in various configurations.
As the Ahha has about 8 spare programable to M code outputs this has
made the choice a one man race.
More later as I progress.
