It's the industry standard (as the original poster pointed out), but just
because something is used by the pro's doesn't mean you have to use it, or
you'll become a pro by using it.
Unless the next big thing is really really good, and reads Autocad files,
and handles the macros (both Lisp & VBA), and makes you coffee, the people
using Autocad won't budge. Think Lotus-123 & Excel. Lotus might be gone,
but Excel still supports the old weird Lotus stuff (and even copies its
bugs).
The pro/amatuer things comes up in audio gear as well, at lot of people buy
pro gear because the think it better quality. Maybe, but pro gear is not
always better, it actually works differently.
Take a tape deck (remember those?), and hit record. On a normal unit, it
will start recording, as you'd expect. On the pro version, it goes to pause
instead. To start recording, you then need to hit the pause button. WTF,
as the saying goes. Two presses, not one?
The difference is the pro unit cues up the tape, as there is a slight delay
between you hitting record, and the unit starting to record something. You
cue up the tape, then when everthing is ready (think Action!) stuff gets
recorded straight away, nothing gets lost (& no distortion).
A minor point, but consumer gear pretending to be pro stuff will really piss
you off one day. Once I was about to walk out the door, and noticed a
program on TV tht looked interesting. So I put a tape in the VCR, hit
record and walked off. You guessed it, when I came back there it was
patiently waiting for me to hit the pause button...
