I haven't used turbocad in years.
I'm sure I have some friends that use it and are happy with it, but they are
the sort of people that would only do very basic drawings so I not sure of
it's abilities anymore. I feel turbo cad is probably a low level entry cad
type package like it used to be, but it may have come a long way since then.
I have used Autocad myself since my first purchase when over at Villanova
Univ in PA, students edition of Autocad 13 was then $99, I could afford
that. I believe Autocad still have student versions cheap in many US
university bookstores, and most don't ask for any student ID, could always
say a relative is there and you buying it for their birthday.
I have been shown solid works, and I believe there is a limited version free
on the solid works site you could try. It is a professional level package in
the Autocad quality bracket.

For CAD/CNC work it depends what you intend to do. If you are using mach3,
it's lazy cam will take in almost any dxf, so a 2d drawing of profiles and
holes you want to sink into a plate is easy, just draw the 2D and tell
lazycam how deep you want each object cut. I use this all the time, nice
easy and convenient.

If you want to do 3D with meshes and the like, then ask someone else. I
haven't got to that stage yet, I will but not yet.

Sorry I couldn't help more

Hi,

How would you compare Solid Works to TurboCAD?

I'm looking for an "affordable" 3D program and found TurboCAD Professional
12 with Mechanical Pack for $ 184.95 here (seems only for US and Canada):
http://www.academicsuperstore.com/market/marketdisp.html?PartNo=757772
I was planning on using it along with Mach 2 to drive my homebuilt CNC:
http://www.machsupport.com/

But then I saw TurboCADCAM 3.0 for about the same price as both softwares
above:
http://www.academicsuperstore.com/market/marketdisp.html?PartNo=735668

I'd like to remain under $500 if possible for a complete system; 3D
modelling and CNC control combined.

Robert
