Okay, I looked again. Hypothesis: There is a rotation taking place
in the table (for some unknown reason) and the rear doesn't move
until the rotational slop is taken up.

You are measuring to the rear edge of the table, try it on the front
edge. If that gives the same result, I'll keep thinking...
