I'd use two V-blocks on a steel table. Set the ballnut in one V-block and clamp it securely to the table. Then clamp the other V-block with a bail on the smooth portion on the end of the screw. Under that V-block stack parallels to prevent the screw from rotating, but no sideload to foul the test. Mount a dial indicator on the table touching the end of the screw. Give it a push-pull and see what happens.

If it's got endplay, that test will show it.

I've used the very screws you're referring to. I've had really good luck with them. That doesn't mean you didn't get a bad set though.

easily seen just handling the screw. Pull it out of the machine clamp
the ball nut to a table and set an indicator on the end of the screw
and push pull test it. If there's backlash, that will display it.
