For desktop PCs, you can buy PCI parallel port cards. Laptops are
generally not so great for CNC control, especially newer ones, due to
the way power management is done.

There are a number of inexpensive PCI cards that work with EMC2 as well,
both parallel port, dumb I/O, and more advanced FPGA based devices.
