The SmoothStepper is a pretty neat USB peripheral which drives a
parallel port, but it is NOT handled through a USB-to-parallel-port
driver. It's a stepping driver which never tries to pretend to be a
virtual parallel port. AFAIK Mach3 is still the only piece of software
which can use that driver though.
I can say that the SS is WAY smoother than what my parallel port could
ever do. My parallel port is on-board, I disabled the on-board video as
per instructions, it's not a laptop, Mach3 analyzed it and declared it
"excellent", but I still had notable- audible, even- defects in the
pulse train. The oscilloscope showed obvious timing inconsistencies in
the pulse train. SS is, well, "smooth". Motors can produce more torque
and more speed.

They have what appear to be standard serial and parallel ports on them, but the same caution applis as above-if the connection to the PC is via USB, I don't know of any CNC machine controller software that will work with those ports.
