Many fully integrated motherboards will not drive an opto-isolator directly.
They just can not sink enough current, so the opto's never work.
Even with the 1mA opto's performance is random, but they are also so slow that a
decent pulse train does not get through, igher speed performance needs a higher
drive current.

Answer - buffer the parallel port before using the signals ....
