There are several inexpensive alternatives to the parallel port, all require external hardware, under $200, all potentially deliver faster step rates and cleaner signals than Windows parallel ports.

1) DeskCNC will work from a serial port, or USB with a $29 USB to Serial adaptor

2) Smooth stepper - USB, Developmental, only with Mach3

3) ncPod - released with Mach3, also has MS visual programming API available at no charge. Oriented towards OEMS.
