Doug,
I made a double elbow support arm for my keyboard that for the time
being, is bolted to the right end of my mill's table. It needs to be
close primarily when jogging the axis during setups. When I upgrade to
an Artisan card, I will be able to start and pause programs from remote
buttons, but will still need the keyboard close for jogging. At that
time, a flip up cover would probably work fine. I did consider mounting
it on a pedastal, but floor space is at a premium. (which I suspect is
an issue for many)
I would like to mount it below the monitor, which would help, but not
eliminate the problem. However, I am dealing with a carpal tunnel/RSI
issue that prevents me from using the keyboard up that high.
I'm one of the heretics here that actually makes money with my CNC
stuff. Starting a machine shop 5 years ago with no money, no customers,
and few machines while living in a Ag/retirement area means bucks have
been very tight, thus my keen interest in DIY CNC.
I machine to feed my family, not play around with a hobby. As a result,
chips really fly, the faster the better. Just finished machining some
PVC parts, took an operation that previously generated huge amounts of
very long stringy swarf in the lathe, and roughed the parts out in the
CNC mill. Still makes tons of chips, but now they sweep up nicely. And
get all over everything including the keyboard.
Push come to shove, somewhere down the road I'll pop for an industrial
sealed keyboard. For now, just barely out of near homelessness mode, I'm
looking to do it cheap if I can.
