Another thing to look at is John Dammeyer's ELS project. He does
positioning with a PIC and takes commands from a keypad and display.
The price is pretty reasonable and it includes a stepper drive system.
It is built for a lathe, and does have extra stuff, but it is worth it
for the ideas... Just remember that you don't need to buy one to see
what and how he did things, but it may be cheaper than reverse
engineering the system.
