Hook up motor, doesn't spin, swap leads, doesn't spin, swap leads...

Eventually you'll blow the driver. Most (all?) of the cheap drivers (even
the low-end Geckos) don't have protection against this.

As you say it won't happen much in real life, but there is always the
possibility of a lead coming out due to vibration or being bumped by
accident.
