Hi
There are a number of people making stepper driver boards using the
LMD18245 driver chips I used in the ELS. These are good to 55VDC and 3A
and so will work with a 36V to 48V supply. They are fairly robust with a
thermal protection sensor inside. The processor that runs them takes care
of the Microstepping.
However, the smaller Gecko's end up being close to the same price so it's
hard to say if rolling your own is worth it.
